ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Five Wolverines earned event titles as the University of Michigan men's track and field team kicked off the 2004 season with a strong showing at the non-scoring Jack Harvey Invitational on Saturday (Jan. 10) in the U-M Indoor Track Building.
Freshman Stann Waithe (Towson, Md./Loch Raven HS) notched a victory in his first collegiate meet, winning the 200-meter dash with a personal-best time of 22.41. Waithe shaved 0.22 off his top mark in high school. Placing second in the event was senior/junior Francis Legasse Jr. (Rochester Hills, Mich./Notre Dame Prep), who registered a time of 23.18.
Senior Brian Turner (Omaha, Neb./Millard North HS) earned his first victory since the 2001 season, finishing first in the mile run with a time of 4:22.48. Turner was 1.33 seconds quicker than runner-up freshman Brian Les (Elm Grove, Wis./Catholic Memorial HS), who was competing unattached.
After turning in a successful cross country season in the fall, sophomore Andrew Ellerton (Windsor, Ontario/Confederation HS) started his track season on the right foot, earning a first-place finish in the 600-meter run. Ellerton picked up two positions in the final lap to clock a time of 1:20.05.
U-M competitors dominated back-to-back events in the 800-meter run and the 3,000-meter run, boasting multiple placers among the top seven in each event. Five Wolverines placed among the top seven in the 800, led by junior/sophomore Rondell Ruff (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford HS), who earned his first collegiate win with a time of 1:56.00. Junior Sean Moore (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) set the pace in the 3,000-meter run, clocking a time of 8:46.22 as Wolverine runners took the top five spots.
Michigan's new volunteer assistant coach, Chitrangan Greer-Travis, who was a six-time NAIA All-American at Siena Heights University, competed unattached in the weight throw and took the title in the event with a mark of 56-7 1/4.
The Wolverines will return to action next Saturday (Jan. 17) when they head across town to Ypsilanti, Mich., for the Eastern Michigan Invitational.
