BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team earned its second Big Ten Conference dual meet victory of the weekend, downing Indiana 183-111 Saturday afternoon (Jan. 17) in the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. Sophomores Chris DeJong (Holland, Mich./Holland HS), Davis Tarwater (Knoxville, Tenn./Webb School) and Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) highlighted U-M's effort in the pool by each winning two individual event titles.
DeJong claimed both of his victories in the backstroke as he posted wins in both the 100- and 200-yard races. The sophomore backstroke specialist earned the 100-yard event title with a time of 49.32, nearly a full second ahead of Indiana's Matt Leach, who finished in 50.30. DeJong later posted a time of 1:48.07 to lead a 1-2 Michigan showing in the 200-yard event. Junior Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park) was second in the race, clocking in at 1:50.86.
Tarwater also posted two wins in his specialty, taking the top spot in both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly races. However, unlike DeJong, Tarwater's first race in the pool was the 200-yard event, in which he won with an NCAA "B" standard time of 1:46.98. In the 100-yard event, Tarwater posted a winning time of 48.86.
The freestyle remained Vanderkaay's stroke of choice as the two-time reigning Big Ten Swimmer of the Week captured both the 100- and 500-yard freestyles. Vanderkaay won the 100-yard title in 45.14 and took the top spot of the 500-yard event in 4:31.96.
In both wins, Vanderkaay was followed into the wall by a fellow teammate as senior captain Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) and junior Andrew Hurd (Oakville, Ontario/Oakville Trafalger HS) finished second in the 100 and 500, respectively.
Ketchum and Hurd claimed individual event titles as well. Ketchum earned NCAA consideration status with a time of 1:38.99 to win the 200-yard free, while Hurd posted a time of 15:39.99 to headline a 1-2-3 finish in the mile.
In the diving well, Michigan took the top three spots in both the one- and three-meter springboard event as Indiana did not have a diver compete. Freshman Pat Noyes (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier HS) posted the win of his collegiate career when he totaled 249.68 for first place on the one-meter board. On the three-meter board senior Jonathan Donadee (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield HS) produced the victory with a score of 231.68.
The Wolverines will have a weekend off from competion before they head to Evanston, Ill., for a dual meet with Northwestern on Jan. 31. Michigan holds a 31-3 all-time series advantage over the Wildcats.
