BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team posted a runner-up showing to host Indiana at the Indiana Quad this afternoon (Saturday, Jan. 17) as the Wolverines totaled 166.5 points in Gladstein Fieldhouse. The Hoosiers recorded 173 points to lead the four-team field. Kent State (104.5) was third, while Indiana State (92) placed fourth.
The Wolverines claimed six event victories, with senior captain Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) and senior/junior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) leading the way with two wins apiece.
Bickett controlled the throwing circle, winning both the shot put and weight throw. Bickett's first two wins of the season came with marks of 51-9 1/4 in the shot put and 57-3 in the weight throw. Her mark in the weight throw topped her personal best in the event by 1-2 1/2 as her old distance stood at 56-0 1/2 set last year at the Sykes-Sabok Challenge Cup (2/14/03).
Gallo doubled up in the mile and 3,000-meter runs as she clocked in with times of 5:00.77 and 9:57.04, respectively. It marks the second consecutive week in which the senior/junior topped the field on the track. Last week, Gallo posted a first-place showing in the 800-meter run (2:13.20) at the Jack Harvey Invitational in the Wolverines' 2004 season opener.
Sophomore Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS) continued her strong start to the 2004 season as she won her second straight 600-meter race, clocking in at 1:31.25. Erdman's time was 0.32 seconds ahead of her 1:31.57 turned in last week at the Jack Harvey Invitational. It was also just 0.92 seconds slower than her Big Ten Conference Indoor Championships and U-M school-record time of 1:30.33 set during the prelims of the event at the 2003 league meet (3/1/03).
Though only the top two finishers from each school earned points, U-M claimed the top four spots in the 600-meter run as junior Jennifer Kulchar (Burton, Mich./Atherton HS), Mora Arnold (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea HS) and senior quad-captain Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) followed Erdman across the finish line. The three Wolverines nearly crossed side by side with times of 1:36.41, 1:36.59 and 1:37.00, respectively.
Michigan's two other event winners were senior quad-captain Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) and Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian HS). Knazze claimed the top spot in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.19, while Jones took the title in the 800-meter run in 2:12.79.
Michigan will be in action next Saturday (Jan. 24) when the Wolverines open the doors to the U-M Indoor Track Building for the Red Simmons Invitational. Field events will open the non-scoring meet at 9:30 a.m., with running events scheduled to begin at noon.
