DURHAM, N.C. -- With a two-under-par 70 from sophomore Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's) and an even-par 72 from freshman Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS), the University of Michigan men's golf team tallied a tournament-best 297 final round today (Monday, Oct. 18), but it would not prove be enough as the Wolverines maintained the 13th spot at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic at the Duke Golf Club.
The Maize and Blue dug itself into a hold early totaling a 310 first round total Sunday morning, but managed to lower it to 305 in the second round, but it still sat in 13th after the first day of play. The Wolverines followed with its best total of the tournament with a 297 in the final round, but stayed in the 13th position with a 912 54-hole tournament total.
For the second straight tournament, junior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist) led the Wolverines as he tied for 21st with a 222 total. After back-to-back even-par 72s during the first day of play, Vozza sat tied for fifth individually. Miscues found him in the final round as he carded a 78 dropping into a tie for 21st. During the tournament, Vozza finished second with 40 total pars during the 54-hole tournament.
Fifth-year senior Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) had a solid tournament as well as he tied for 34th. After opening with a 77 in the first round, he found his rhythm in the second round carding a one-over 73 to put him in the top 25 overall after day one. A few costly mistakes on the back-nine hurt his final round as he carded his second 77 to give him a 227 total.
Ottenweller cracked into the top 50 as he tied for 49th with a 231 total. After firing a 79 in the first round and an 80 in the second round, he recovered in fine fashion firing an even-par 72 in the final round to move him up the individual leaderboard.
Other Michigan finishes include: Dore, tie for 61st (83-80-70/233); sophomore Matt McLaughlin (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS), was 76th (82-81-82/243) and senior/junior Jimmy Wisinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS), tie for 72nd (84-77-79/240) after playing as an individual.
Host Duke (291-288-281) set a new tournament record posting a four-under 860 to win by 13 shots over North Carolina (295-297-281/873). North Carolina's Martin Ureta (71-73-66/210) was the individual medalist after coming out on top after a four-man playoff that also featured Duke's Ryan Blaum (73-68-69/210) and Michael Quagliano (72-69-69/210), along with Michigan State's Matt Harmon (67-71-72/210). Quagliano and Harmon both had pars at the first playoff hole, but Blaum and Ureta had birdie threes. Ureta finally won the playoff with a birdie on the fourth extra hole.
The Wolverines have only a week to prepare for one of their biggest tests of the fall season, when they head to Bandon Dunes, Ore., Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 25-26) for the Big Ten/Pac-10 Challenge. The 54-hole tournament will feature several of the conference's top schools at the prestigious Bandon Dunes Golf Resort.
