Hortillosa, Defense Key Michigan Rally Against California

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Rallying from an early deficit, the No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored three unanswered goals to defeat No. 14 California 3-1 on Friday (Oct. 22) at Phyllis Ocker Field.
The Wolverines took the lead for good late in the second period on senior captain Adrienne Hortillosa's (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) team-leading sixth game-winning goal of the season, off a penalty stroke at the 31:35 mark. The Wolverines were awarded the one-on-one scenario after a California defender pulled the ball off the goal line following a deep shot by senior Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican), preventing a sure U-M goal. As Golden Bear goalkeeper Kelly Knapp moved left to anticipate Hortillosa's shot, the Wolverine senior fired low to the right corner to give U-M its first lead of the contest.
The Golden Bears' Valentina Godfrid opened scoring early in the game, corraling the loose ball deep on the right side of the Michigan cage before sending it into the far low corner to register an unassisted marker just 6:20 into the first half. The Wolverines responded exactly six minutes later as junior/sophomore Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) evened the score a one goal apiece. Junior Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) initiated the play by tracking to the right across the top of the circle before dishing the ball to the left post, where Morris redirected it past a sprawling Knapp.
As the U-M defense clamped down in the second half, sophomore Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) added an insurance goal for the Wolverines, redirecting a pass from freshman Lucia Belassi (Paysandu, Uruguay/Liceo #1) from in front of the California cage at the 56:03 mark.
The Wolverines outshot California 18-9 and held the 8-6 advantage in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeeper Beth Riley (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra Area HS) made five stops in the U-M cage for the victory, while Knapp earned seven saves on the Wolverines' 10 shots on goal.
U-M will return to action on Saturday (Oct. 23) for its final home game of the season. The game against Big Ten Conference foe Ohio State is slated for a 2 p.m. start at Ocker Field.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Marcia Pankratz
On the game ... "California is a very strong, athletic, quick and skilled team; their goalkeeper played exceptionally well today. I really liked our response to the game. I thought that we played our tactics quite well and continued to get better as the game went on. We started to put them under pressure near the end, so that was good to see."
