ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team earned a victory in the main draw singles quarterfinals Monday (Oct. 25) at the 2004 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships. Hung has yet to surrender one set in each of his four wins at the tournament.
Hung, the 12th seed in the 64-player singles bracket, turned in an impressive performance to defeat No. 1 seed Jakub Praibis of Indiana in the quarterfinals. After slipping by with a 6-4 victory in the first set, Hung did not even give Praibis a chance in the second frame, winning 6-0 to advance to the next round.
Hung will meet Notre Dame's Stephen Bass in the semifinals tomorrow (Oct. 26) at 9 a.m. Should Hung defeat Bass, he will move into the final and face the winner of Illinois' Ryler DeHeart vs. Ohio State's Devin Mullings following the completion of both semifinal matches. Hung would also secure a spot in the 2004 ITA National Indoor Championships, which U-M will host Nov. 4-7, with a berth in the final.
Hung and classmate Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North) were unable to move past Ohio State's Ross Wilson and Drew Eberly, losing 8-1 in the main draw doubles quarterfinals later in the day.
