LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- The No. 13 University of Michigan men's soccer team earned its second draw of the season today (Sunday, Oct. 3) in a 1-1 match at Louisville. The Wolverines scored the first goal of the game with a marker by sophomore Bobby Trybula (Loveland, Ohio/Archbishop Moeller HS) at 30:16, but a late goal by Louisville at 67:30 tied the game at 1-1, eventually sending the match into overtime. Neither team was able to come up with the game-winning goal in the two 10-minute extra sessions.
Michigan created the first scoring opportunity of the game with a corner kick in the second minute of play. Junior Ryan Sterba (Westlake, Ohio/St. Ignatius) serviced the ball to the back post, finding sophomore Kevin Savitskie (Plymouth, Mich./Salem HS). Savitskie rose above the defense for the header, but his attempt hit the crossbar and the game remained scoreless.
After being turned away two more times around the 15th minute, the Wolverines finally broke through with Trybula's goal. In the 30th minute, Michigan built the attack up from the defensive backfield, up through the central mid and down Louisville's left sideline. Michigan found Sterba on an overlapping run and the junior sent a cross back across the Cardinals' net. The pass was collected by Trybula, who sent the shot home to give Michigan a 1-0 halftime lead.
In the second half, Louisville drew even with a goal by Marco Terminesi. Off a restart, the Cardinals sent a service to the back post and U-M goalkeeper Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Stevenson HS) came out to play the ball. However, Louisville's Ryan Meyer flicked the ball on to his teammate for the equalizer. With neither team able to score the in the final 22 minutes to regulation, the game went into overtime.
After neither team was able to score the game-winner in the first overtime period, the teams began to play a second 10-minute session. In the 100th minute, senior Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) beat the Louisville defense down the right sideline and sent a cross back to the middle of the field, finding junior Trai Blanks (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) in front of the Cardinals' net. Blanks turned on the ball and fired a shot at the net, but goalkeeper Charles Edwards made the save.
Michigan will have one week off before continuing its current road trip with a Big Ten road game Sunday (Oct. 10) at No. 6 Indiana. The match will mark the start of conference play for the Wolverines.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Steve Burns
On the game ... "It was a great effort on our part. We definitely left our competitive souls on the field going for the win. That's all you can ask of a team. On Friday, we had a physically and emotionally draining win and I think the team did a good job of responding for this Louisville game. The team understands that it is this kind of effort that will be required the rest of the way."
On the play of Joe Zawacki ... "I think it is just a great testament to our strong goalkeeping. We have not missed a beat with Joe in there. He has the confidence of the team and he is a very strong goalkeeper, especially with his feet. The team is willing to relieve some pressure by playing back to him and changing the point of attack. It is great for him, a fifth-year senior who has battled through injuries throughout his career, to step in and be in a position to lead this team to a higher level."
On if the team is peaking for the match with Indiana ... "Certainly this is the time of the year you expect things to start to come together and they definitely are. We know we have arguably the two most difficult games on our schedule coming up on the road. We feel good as a team that we will be able to execute in the final third of the field. At the same time, we cannot let down in the back third because we are facing a pair of potent teams in Indiana and Notre Dame."
