KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- Junior/sophomore Katie Kramer (Andover, Mass./Andover HS) and senior Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) came off the bench to score goals as the University of Michigan women's soccer team earned a 2-1 non-conference win over Western Michigan on a windy Saturday afternoon (Oct. 30) at the WMU Soccer Complex. The Wolverines snapped a four-game losing streak by winning their regular-season finale.
The Wolverines took an early lead 15:06 into the contest, as junior Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South HS) made a cross from the endline to Kramer, who put the ball past Bronco goalkeeper Lea Perz at the far post to give U-M a 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Brenna Mulholland (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), who found Heaton streaking up the right side of the field, also earned an assist on the play her first career point.
Morgan's third goal of the season turned out to be the eventual game-winner, as she was taken down in the box and put the ensuing penalty kick in the back of the net at 55:57. Western Michigan's Sara Cultra cut the lead in half eight minutes later for the final margin.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X HS) was credited with one save. The Wolverines held a 15-4 edge in shots, including an 8-1 advantage in the first half.
Michigan (10-7-2) will open postseason action Thursday (Nov. 4) when the No. 3-seeded Wolverines face No. 6 seed Wisconsin in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus, Ohio.
