Vozza's 66 Leads Michigan to 10th at Landfall Tradition

WILMINGTON, N.C. -- Guided by a career-best six-under 66 from junior Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist), the University of Michigan men's golf team tallied a final round three-under 285 and jumped two spots to finish 10th today (Sunday, Oct. 31) at the Landfall Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall, Jack Nicklaus Course, with a season-best 879 54-hole total.

For the fourth straight tournament, Vozza led the Wolverines. After opening with a two-over 74 in the first round, he slipped further down the standings with a 77 in the second round. Then came the third round. After missing four birdie chances through the first six holes of the final round, he got one and finished the back nine one-under. With a birdie on No. 1, he holed out on No. 2 for an eagle to jump him to four under with seven holes to play. He tacked on two more birdies to help him close out his tournament with a career-best 66, which was the lowest Wolverine total since 1998. He tied for 21st with a 217 54-hole total.
Fifth-year senior Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) continued his consist play with a solid tied for 32nd. After an even-par 72 in the first round, he had a two-over 74 in the second, followed by a three-over 75 to give him a 221 tournament total.
Sophomore Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's) got back on track as he was 34th with a 222 total. He opened with a three-over 75, but lowered it in the second with a two-over 74 and closed out with a one-over 73. Freshman Brian Ottenweller (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central HS), tied for 44th with a 226 total (77-75-74) and freshman Tim Schaetzel (Atlanta, Ga./Pace Academy) tied for 54th with a career-best total of 230 (73-85-72).
Michigan State (281-285-285) took the team lead after the second round and did not look back as the Spartans took home the team title with a 13-under 851 54-hole total. Duke (278-290-287) was the team runner-up at 855, with Purdue (282-286-290) was third at 858. Duke's Ryan Blaum took medalist honors with an eight-under 208 total (68-71-69). Blue Devil teammate Nathan Smith (66-72-71) and UNC-Wilmington's Will Shambley (64-70-75) were the runner-ups with 209 totals.
The Wolverines have now completed its 2004 fall season. The Maize and Blue will now focus on training throughout the winter months. The next time U-M will hit the links will be Feb. 27-March 1, when the Wolverines head to San Juan, Puerto Rico, for the 2005 Puerto Rico Classic at the Rio Mar Country Club, River Course.
