
Wolverines to Head North to Canadian Collegiate Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- After a record-breaking start to the season, the University of Michigan men's golf team heads to Ontario for the Canadian Collegiate Invitational, Sunday through Tuesday (Sept. 14-16) at Oviinbyrd Golf Club in Foot's Bay. The 11-team field will play 54 holes on the par-72, 7,123-yard course.
Notes
• The Island Resort field will be made up of 11 teams, including British Columbia, George Mason, Kent State, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Missouri, Notre Dame, Penn State, Rutgers and UNC Wilmington.
• U-M will travel five starters and an individual to the Canadian Collegiate. Sophomores Nilay Naik, Dean Muratore, Nicolas Simon and RJ Arone with freshman Jordan Hwang make up the U-M starting five. Redshirt-sophomore Caden Pinckes will travel and play as an individual.
• Aided by a final-round 287 (-1), Michigan tallied an 852 (-12) 54-hole total and posted a runner-up finish at the inaugural Canadian Collegiate Invitational, which was the first NCAA D-I men's golf tournament played in Canada. After opening with back-to-back 66s (-6) on the first day, former Wolverine Hunter Thomson used a closing 70 (-2) to win his second career tournament with a 202 (-14) total.
• Making their return to the Oviinbyrd Golf Club, Arone and Muratore look to repeat their top-25 finishes as they tied for 14th (214, -2) and 21st (216, E), respectively.
• Michigan opened its season in record-breaking fashion at the Island Resort Intercollegiate, posting a program-best 822 (-42) to finish third at Sage Run Golf Club. After rounds of 281 (-7) and 274 (-14) on Aug. 31, the Wolverines closed with a 267 (-21) -- tying the program's single-round record and carding the day's best score by six shots.
• Leading the way was Arone, who paced U-M for the first time with a career-best 205 (-11). After opening with back-to-back 70s, he closed with a career-low 65 that featured 11 pars and seven birdies. His Island Resort total shattered his previous best of 214 (-2) at the last season's Canadian Collegiate.
• In his first career start, Simon tied for 12th with a 207 (-9) at the Island Resort Intercollegiate. He posted three straight sub-par rounds, closing with a career-best 68 (-4) to improve his 54-hole best by 14 shots (69-70-68).
• In his Michigan debut at Sage Run, Naik matched his career-low 54-hole total with a 208 (-8) and tied his career-best round with a 67 (-5) in the second round. He tied for 15th, marking his eighth top-20 finish in 11 career events.
• Hwang made his first career start with a 75, but rebounded to post a 213 (-3) and tie for 35th, giving U-M five sub-par 54-hole scores among its starters. Over his final 40 holes, he played eight-under with 12 birdies, four bogeys and 26 pars.
