ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball program inked 6-foot-1 middle blocker Beth Karpiak (LaGrange, Ill./Lyons Township HS) during the early signing period, head coach Mark Rosen announced Wednesday (Nov. 17).
"Beth is a solid athlete and an excellent student who will fit well into our program," said Rosen. "She is a hard worker who is very coachable and possesses a lot of intangibles that coaches love."
Karpiak captained Lyons Township to regional and sectional championships in 2004 and played club volleyball with the First Alliance Volleyball Club, helping the 17-1 team qualify for junior nationals in 2004. Lyons Township also captured the regional championship in her junior season in 2003. As a middle blocker, Karpiak earned all-conference honors in 2003 and 2004 and was named all-area second team by the Chicago Sun-Times in 2004.
"Beth is a good jumper and competes well as a middle blocker," noted Rosen. "We'll see where she can make the most impact when she joins the team and showcase her strengths."
Karpiak also excels off the court as a member of National Honor Society and a 2004 Academic All-Area honoree. She ranks at the top of a class of 890 students and was the recipient of the Golden L Award. Karpiak is a three-time all-conference academic team honoree and is a member of the math and Spanish honor societies.
Michigan embarks on its final regular-season road trip of the year when it faces Wisconsin on Friday (Nov. 19) in Madison, Wis., and Northwestern on Saturday (Nov. 20) in Evanston, Ill. Both matches are 7 p.m. CST starts.
