U-M Still Second at Indiana Invitational After 14 Events

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 15 University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team remains in second place after day two (Saturday, Nov. 20) of the eight-team Indiana Invitational at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Wolverines have accumulated 558 points through 14 events and are just 34 points behind first-place Indiana (592 points). Leading the way for U-M on the second day of action were sophomores Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant HS) and Susan Gilliam (Los Angeles, Calif./Bolles HS), who won the 100-yard butterfly and the 200-yard freestyle, respectively.
Michigan started the evening session with a runner-up finish in the 200-yard medley relay. Junior Carolina Sierra (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Palermo de San Jose), freshman Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander von Humboldt), Brady and classmate Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) earned 34 points with a season-best time of 1:44.07.
U-M placed two swimmers in the championship final of the 400-yard individual medley. Freshman Justine Mueller (Monroe, Mich./Monroe HS) clocked in with an NCAA consideration time of 4:22.27 for second place, while sophomore Annie Stein (Longmont, Colo./Germantown Academy) took fourth with season-best mark of 4:29.90. Gilliam swam the fastest time in the morning preliminary heat with an NCAA 'B' time of 4:21.51 but did not compete in the final.
The Wolverines earned three top-10 finishes in the 100-yard butterfly, including Brady's NCAA provisional and season-best time of 55.19 for first place. Sierra also swam her fastest time of the season (57.39) for eighth place. Freshman Wendy Shieh (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) had the top time in the consolation final, touching in a season-best 57.57 for ninth place.
Michigan earned 36 points in the 200-yard freestyle race, as Gilliam took the crown with an NCAA consideration time of 1:48.84 and Smith took third place with an NCAA 'B' mark of 1:50.10.
Silva was U-M's top finisher in the 100-yard breaststroke event, clocking in at 1:05.05 to take fourth place. Junior Elsa Larson (Portland, Ore./Lincoln HS) placed seventh at 1:06.98.
Brady provided the Wolverines with 14 points with a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at a season-best time of 55.98. Sierra touched right behind Brady with a season-best 57.97 for fourth place. In the consolation final, Mueller finished in 58.48 for ninth place and freshman Katie Smith (Plano, Texas/Hebron HS) took the 12th spot (59.43).
Freshman Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion HS) was Michigan's top scorer on the three-meter diving board, totaling 430.15 points for fifth place. Sophomore Ellen Van Cleve (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) finished in sixth place with a total of 404.05 points.
The Wolverines closed out the meet with a runner-up finish in the 800-yard freestyle relay.
Gilliam, Lindsey Smith, junior Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) and Mueller just missed an NCAA 'B' standard with a season-best time of 7:24.85.
Competition at the Indiana Invitational concludes tomorrow (Sunday, Nov. 21) at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. Preliminary heats begin at 9 a.m. and finals will start with the 1,650-yard freestyle at 3 p.m.
