YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan wrestling team made its 2004-05 season debut competing unattached at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday (Nov. 6). Sophomore/freshman Eric Tannenbaum (Naperville, Ill./North HS) captured the 149-pound title to lead a contingent of seven Wolverine placewinners.
Tannenbaum and fifth-year senior Jeremiah Tobias (Manchester, Mich./Manchester HS) tore through the competition at 149 pounds as the top two seeded wrestlers. Tannenbaum cruised into the championship match with a fall, a technical fall and a pair of major decisions before domintaing Navy's John Cox in the final, earning a 14-2 major decision to finish with a perfect 5-0 record. Tobias registered three straight pins before narrowly falling to Cox in the semfinal round. The Wolverine senior responded with two wins in the consolation bracket to claim third place.
Making his U-M debut, freshman Craig Gillison (Arcadia, Mich./Benzie Central HS)registered a pair of falls and two decisions en route to the 133-pound final, including a quick pin against Cleveland State's David Armstrong at 2:34 in his first collegiate match. The Wolverine freshman squared off against Edinboro's Shawn Bunch, a two-time NCAA qualifier, in the championship bout, falling 15-8.
Also making impressive U-M debuts were freshman Steve Luke (Massillon, Ohio/Perry HS) and freshman Tyrel Todd (Bozeman, Mont./Bozeman HS), who registered a 6-1 mark to claim third place at 174 pounds. Luke recorded a pair of major decisions and a fall in his first collegiate match en route to the 165-pound final, where he suffered a close 7-5 loss to Edinboro's Nate Yetzer. Todd rebounded in the wrestlebacks after dropping a 8-4 decision to Navy's Matthew Stolpinksi in the quarterfinal round with four straight victories, including a win over Stolpinski in the third-place match.
Rounding out the Wolverine placewinners at the upper weights were freshman Casey White (Commerce, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) and senior/junior Tony Grygorzyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS), who placed fifth at 197 pounds and fourth at heavyweight, respectively.
The Wolverines will host its annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad on Sunday (Nov. 14) to determine their starting lineup for the 2004-05 campaign. The meet is slated to begin at noon at Cliff Keen Arena and will be preceded by a technique and practice planning clinic conducted by former Olympic wrestlers Bill and Jim Scherr.
