Michigan Head Coach Cheryl Burnett
On the game ... "We played so hard. We knew going in they were really going to emphasize post play and we wanted to take them out of their half-court offense. We actually took them out of a lot of their sets. They were pretty one-dimensional in what we call a stack, but they did it extremely well. In the first half, we talked to our players that we needed to stop giving them layups and free throws because offensively they were getting way too many easy opportunities. At the same time, we struggled against their 2-3 zone. We made it very, very difficult, but yet at the end of the first half we were right there after struggling offensively. Their soft press bothered us a bit, which I don't think it should have. But again, their kids played really hard, stayed with it to the end."
On the effort of Tabitha Pool ... "Her effort was phenomenal. I will say publicly what I said in the locker room -- that I feel badly for Tabitha Pool. She comes to Michigan and it's her senior year and she wants to walk off the floor being very prideful of the win against the crosstown rival. We are all disappointed for her. We know we have a lot of areas we need to get better in, but we got beat by a team today that I think is a quality, quality team that really played harder than we did in a lot of very specific areas. I was proud of our kids for staying in there until the end when we were scrambling and really trying to give that effort all the way down to zero on the clock."
On the inexperience of the freshman players ... "I am always feeling like I am giving that as an excuse because there were certain areas defensively that I really thought we needed to do a better job of, but being a realist, we definitely will get better against a 2-3 zone. Even I as a coach saw some things and some personnel issues that we really only have one option in vs. the zone and usually we have about 10. Now I do not want to use that as an excuse. We should have done a much better job vs. the zone and we should have done a much better job defensively."
On the offensive style in the game ... "Again we made the zone very difficult. We saw some really good positions finally in the second half, but not enough of them. The best way I can describe it is that we were dribbling when we should have been passing. We were passing when we should have been dribbling. We weren't reversing the ball, and finally in the second half we got some inside looks with Katie Dierdorf in there that we should have really been getting there earlier. So there was a balance of the good and the balance of the bad."
