DMR Team Earns Automatic NCAA Berth at Meyo Invite

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- For the second straight year, the University of Michigan women's track and field team automatically qualified its distance medley relay squad for the NCAA Indoor Championships on the first day of the Meyo Invitational. The foursome of Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac HS), Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS), Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele HS) and Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) posted a time of 11:11.58 Friday evening (Feb. 6) in Notre Dame's Loftus Sports Center.
U-M's distance medley relay team finished third in the race as Georgetown took the event title with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 11:07.27. The Wolverines' time was 3.42 seconds under the NCAA "A" standard of 11:15.00. Last year at the Meyo Invitational Michigan posted a time of 11:21.09.
Senior/junior Anna Jones (Omaha, Neb./Marian HS) earned her second win of the season when she crossed the finish line of the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:52.87. Jones topped the field by 1.2 seconds, with Megan Johnson of Notre Dame finishing second at 2:54.07.
In other action on the track, Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) and Mora Arnold (Gregory, Mich./Chelsea HS) finished second and third in the 500-meter dash with times of 1:14.90 and 1:15.04, respectively.
In the field events, Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) and Ashley Eckel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) finished third (53-10 1/4) and fourth (53-4 1/4), respectively, in the weight throw. Doris Simmons (Cassopolis, Mich./Ross Beatty HS) and Candice Wilkey (Elmvale, Ontario/Elmvale District) tied for sixth in the long jump, both marking 17-2 1/4. In the pole vault Lynn Gasparella (New Hudson, Mich./South Lyon HS) was U-M's top finisher as she finished tied for seventh, clearing a height of 11-5 3/4. Rounding out Michigan's pole vaulters, Kristin Pearson (Escanaba, Mich./Escanaba HS) and Kelly Catino (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) tied for 13th with a best height of 10-6.
The Wolverines return to action at the Meyo Invitational Saturday (Feb. 7) at 10 a.m. for the 3,000-meter run.
