Vozza Leads Michigan to Third at Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- In its final tournament before the Big Ten season, the University of Michigan men's golf team took a third-place finish with an 894 54-hole total at the Furman Intercollegiate, held Friday through Sunday (March 26-28) at the Furman University Golf Course. The Wolverines stayed consistent throughout the weekend, carding rounds of 295, 299 and 300 to hold onto the third spot in the standings for all three days.
Just as U-M held its place in the standings for the duration, the first and second place positions remained the same for all 54 holes as well. Furman led from start to finish on its home course, shooting an 883 (286-292-305) tournament total, while Virginia Tech held second throughout, coming away with an 885 (293-289-303) team total to finish just two strokes behind the Paladins. In addtition to hosting and the team title the Furman duo of Matt Davidson (71-73-73) and Rob Langley (72-72-73) both earned medalist honors with one-over-par 217 performances.
As for the Wolverines, sophomore Christian Vozza (Traverse City, Mich./Grand Rapids Baptist HS) led the team overall for the first time this spring with a total of 220, tying for sixth for his second top-10 tournament finish of the season. Vozza was the model of consistency, opening with an even-par 72 and following with back-to-back 74s.
Senior/junior Rob Tighe (Traverse City, Mich./West HS) and freshman Kevin Dore (Dundas, Ontario/St. Mary's HS) rounded out the top-20 finishers for the Maize and Blue, both tying for 18th with 54-hole totals of 224. Tighe began the final round tied for 35th after carding rounds of 75 and 76 but moved up in the standings after coming in strong with a one-over 73 to tie for the best score of the day for the Wolverines. Dore led off the tournament with a team-best one-under 71 before falling slightly in the second round, carding a 77. The freshman was able hang on the final day, finishing with a 76 to maintain his tie for 18th in the standings.
Other Wolverine finishes included: sophomore Brandon Duff (Goodrich, Mich./Powers Catholic HS), tied for 40th at 228 (77-72-79); and freshman Matt McLaughlin (Raleigh, N.C./Millbrook HS), tied for 82nd at 234 (80-77-77). Playing as individuals, senior Dave Nichols (Mesa, Ariz./Rochester Adams HS [Mich.]) tied for 62nd (79-75-77/231) and junior/sophomore Mark McIntosh (Gaylord, Mich./Gaylord HS) tied for 75th (82-78-73/233).
The Maize and Blue will head to Big Ten country when the Wolverines travel to West Lafayette, Ind., Saturday and Sunday (April 10-11) for Purdue's Boilermaker Invitational. The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex.
