Ray Snags Another Big Ten Athlete of the Week Award

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan senior/junior Elise Ray (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake HS) has been named the Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week for women's gymnastics for the second time this season. At No. 1 UCLA (March 6), Ray placed fourth in the all-around (39.450), winning the balance beam title (9.950) and capturing top five finishes on the uneven bars (tie-2nd, 9.950) and vault (tie-5th, 9.850).

This is the second time this season and sixth time in her career that Ray, the 2002 NCAA beam champion, 2001 NCAA all-around co-champion and captain of the 2000 U.S. Olympic women's gymnastics team, has been named the conference Gymnast of the Week. Ray was selected once as a freshman (Feb. 21, 2001), on three occasions as a sophomore (Feb. 18, Feb. 25 and March 11, 2002), and once earlier this season (Feb. 27).
No. 19-ranked Michigan (8-5, 3-1 Big Ten) hosts No. 5 Alabama this Friday (March 12, 7 p.m.) at Crisler Arena.
