BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 50 University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped a close 4-3 decision to No. 68 Indiana Saturday afternoon (April 10) at the IU Tennis Center. The IU doubles point proved to be the difference in the match, as each team took three wins apiece in singles action.
The Hoosiers earned a pair of 8-4 victories at No. 1 and No. 3 to claim the doubles point and go up 1-0 in the match. U-M's lone winning pair was at No. 2, as junior David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) made his dual-match season doubles debut with freshman Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) and defeated Ryan McCarthy and Neil Kenner 8-6.
Indiana kept things rolling in singles play, taking away three straight wins at, in order, No. 1, No. 5 and No. 4 to earn the team victory. Ryan Recht earned a straight-set win over junior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) at the top spot, as Recht won the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6(3) before Rubin pulled up lame with an injury after going down 4-0 in the second frame. McCarthy provided the Hoosiers with a 3-0 advantage, handing Anving just his second loss in the last 14 matches, 6-3, 6-2. David Bubenicek's 6-3, 6-4 victory over Heller clinched the team win for Indiana.
With the outcome already decided, the Wolverines closed out the day with solid wins in the three remaining matches on the court. Freshman Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./Sagemont Virtual School) improved to 11-3 on the dual match season with a super-tiebreaker victory over Dmytro Ishtuganov. After splitting the first two sets, Peretz slipped by with a 10-8 score in the extra frame. Senior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) improved his Big Ten record to a team-best 5-1 with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Kenner at No. 2. Freshman Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) gave Michigan its third and final point with a 6-4, 7-6(5) win over Tom Bagnato at No. 3.
The Wolverines (11-6, 2-4 Big Ten) close out their home schedule next weekend with a pair of conference matches. Michigan will host Purdue on Saturday (April 17) before taking on No 1-ranked Illinois on Sunday (April 18). Both matches are slated for a noon start at the Varsity Tennis Center.
