ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 53 University of Michigan men's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 68 Purdue Saturday afternoon (April 17) at the Varsity Tennis Center. After dropping the doubles point indoors, the Wolverines managed just two wins in outdoor singles action to drop to 11-7 overall and 2-5 in the Big Ten.
Pairing together for the first time in their dual match doubles careers, freshmen Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) and Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) jumped out to a commanding 5-1 lead over Troy Havens and David Robinson at the top spot, and the duo gave up just two games from that point on en route to an 8-3 victory to give the Wolverines the early advantage. Paul Rose and Scott Warner evened the match after winning seven straight games to defeat junior Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and freshman Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) 8-4 at No. 3.
The doubles point was decided at No. 2, as Sounak Chatterjee and Filip Koziell spoiled senior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and junior David Anving's (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) dual match doubles debut by a 9-7 score. The U-M tandem matched Purdue's efforts through seven games, but the Boilermaker pairing came out on top in the final two games to win 9-7 and clinch the doubles point.
After the clouds cleared, the action was moved to the outdoor courts, where Purdue claimed victories at No. 3 and No. 1 to come within one point of clinching the team win. Robinson gave the Boilermakers their second point by defeating Heller in straight sets at the third slot, 6-3, 6-2. At the top spot, Jackson made quick work of his opponent in the first frame 6-1, but Rose fought back to take the final two sets 6-2, 6-1 and give the Boilermakers a 3-0 lead. Hung earned his team-high 12th dual match victory with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 defeat of Havens at No. 2 to give the Wolverines their first point of the afternoon.
Junior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) kept the momentum with a gutsy 6-2, 7-6(5) win over Eric Hodgeman at No. 6. After dominating Hodgeman in the first set, Fischer stormed out to a 5-1 lead in the second frame and was within one point of taking the match. However, Hodgeman was able to stave off elimination by battling through six set points and seven deuces. A flustered Fischer allowed his opponent to tie the score at 5-5 and the match eventually went to a tiebreaker. In the extra frame, Fischer was finally able to finish off Hodgeman and cut Purdue's lead in the match to 3-2.
Unfortunately, Fischer's win would be U-M's last point of the day, as the Boilermakers posted victories at No. 5 and No. 4, respectively, to take home the match. Colin Foster came back to defeat Anving 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, while Chatterjee closed things out with a 7-6(3), 7-5 win over Peretz.
The Wolverines return to the Varsity Tennis Center tomorrow (Sunday, April 18) to face top-ranked Illinois at noon. It will be the final home match for Jackson, who will be honored prior to the match with the Fighting Illini.
