PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Claiming first place in the 10,000-meter run, fifth-year senior captain Nick Stanko (Wyandotte, Mich./Roosevelt HS) paced the University of Michigan men's track and field team Thursday (April 22) on the first day of competition at the Penn Relays at Franklin Field.
Stanko was the only competitor to break the 30-minute mark in the event as he led the 36-man field to the line with a personal-best 29:39.01, finishing 45.29 seconds ahead of runner-up Corey Duquette of Minot State. Stanko bettered his personal record by nearly a full minute but will need to shave an additional 39.01 seconds to hit the NCAA qualifying standard of 29:00.00.
It was the third career victory for Stanko and just his first at 10,000 meters, adding to his previous wins in the 3,000-meter indoor and 5,000-meter outdoor events last season.
The Penn Relays run through Saturday. Friday's competition for men's college division is slated to begin at 10 a.m. with the high jump.
