MADISON, Wis. -- The No. 54 University of Michigan men's tennis team swept the singles competition to defeat Wisconsin 6-1 in both teams' regular-season finale Sunday (April 25) at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. After dropping two of three in doubles to the Badgers, the Wolverines (13-8, 4-6 Big Ten) surrendered just two sets in the six singles matches.
The Badgers captured the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3, but freshmen Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) prevented the sweep with an 8-6 victory over No. 42-ranked David Hippee and Alexander Kasarov at the top position.
Junior Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) evened the match and improved to 5-1 on the dual match season with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Pete Amundson at No. 6. Michigan's next three singles victories all involved first-set tiebreakers. Hung defeated his seventh straight opponent with a 7-6(4), 6-1 win at No. 2, and freshman Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) brought U-M within one point of the match with a 7-6(5), 7-5 victory over Mark Weinig at No. 5. Heller provided the clincher at No. 3, as he posted a 7-6(3), 6-4 win over Hippee to end a six-match losing streak.
Junior David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) came back to defeat Ward Bortz 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 to improve to a perfect 5-0 at No. 4 this season. Senior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) completed the singles sweep with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 comeback victory over Kasarov for his first career win at No. 1.
The Wolverines await seeding for the upcoming 2004 Big Ten Championship hosted by Michigan State University. The team tournament will be played April 29-May 2 at the MSU Outdoor Tennis Courts in East Lansing, Mich.
