Men's Tennis Collects Road Win Against Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The No. 50 University of Michigan men's tennis team posted a 6-1 victory over Indiana State Friday afternoon (April 9) in a non-conference matchup at the Duane Klueh Tennis Complex. The Wolverines (11-5, 2-3 Big Ten) won the doubles point for the fourth consecutive match and followed with victories in all but one in singles action.
Juniors Vinny Gossain (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and Josef Fischer (Nuernberg, Germany/Bradenton Academy) picked up their second straight win together at No. 3, defeating Boyd Michau and Jonathan Atkins 8-2 to give Michigan an early leg up in the match. Senior Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and freshman Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) clinched the first point soon after, outplaying Aaron Phillips and Ivan D'Argence Arceo by an 8-5 score at No. 1.
Just as he did the previous week, Fischer dominated his singles opponent at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Atkins. Fischer has surrendered just four games in his last two matches. Junior David Anving (Tvaaker, Sweden/Varbergs Gymnasieskola) captured his team-high 12th win of the dual match season and put the Wolverines ahead 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Michau at No. 4. Sophmore Carey Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS) provided the clincher for the team win, defeating Phillips 7-5, 6-2 to improve his 2003-04 record to an impressive 17-4.
Rounding out the U-M victors were Hung and junior Michael Rubin (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic HS). Hung played R.J. Nagel through two frames at No. 3 before coming out on top 7-5, while Rubin also battled Andrey Kumantsov through two sets at No. 1 before prevailing in the super tiebreaker by a score of 10-2 to give the Wolverines their sixth and final point of the day.
The Wolverines finish out the weekend against Big Ten opponent Indiana at noon EST/CDT on Saturday (April 10) at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind.

Anthony Jackson's victory with Brian Hung at No. 1 gave him 40 doubles wins for his dual match career at Michigan. In four seasons, Jackson has collected a dual doubles mark of 40-39.
