Stephenson Wins First Title as Wolverine at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Graduate/senior javelin thrower Lindsey Stephenson (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg HS) of the University of the Michigan women's track and field team won her first event title as a Wolverine at the two-day, non-scoring Jesse Owens Classic, which concluded early Saturday evening (May 1) due to inclement weather.
Stephenson captured her first javelin victory in the Maize and Blue as she matched her season best of 154-10 from a week ago (Penn Relays, April 22). The distance is an NCAA regional qualifying mark. Stephenson's previous best showing as a Wolverine was a runner-up finish, which she accomplished twice, at the Mt. SAC Relays (April 16) and at the Florida State Relays (March 20).
Stephenson was one of four Wolverines to qualify for the Mideast Regional Championships, which will be held in Baton Rouge, La., in three weeks. Joining Stephenson on the list were senior quad-captain Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) in the discus, hammer and shot put, junior sprinter Sierra Hauser-Price (Van Nuys, Calif./Notre Dame HS) in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and sophomore Elizabeth Boyle (Northbrook, Ill./New Trier HS) in the pole vault.
The Wolverines host their first and only outdoor track and field meet of the season next Friday and Saturday (May 7-8), as they welcome teams from around Michigan and Ohio to Ferry Field for the Len Paddock Invitational. Field events kick off both days with competition beginning at 11 a.m., and running events begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday and 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Admission is free.
