The first varsity eight beat No. 1 California en route to its preliminary heat victory to advance directly to Saturday's (May 29) semifinals. In its second varsity eight heat, Michigan sat in second place behind Brown after the opening 500 meters. With the Bears well ahead at the midpoint of the race, Virginia and U-M were left to vie for second. Brown continued to pull away as it went on to win the race by open water in 6:47.3. The Cavaliers barely led U-M with 500 meters remaining but then extended their lead to take second in the race in 6:48.8. The Wolverines earned third in 6:54.8. With the win, Brown advances directly to Sunday's grand final. Michigan and the remaining boats will compete in a repechage on Saturday.
The first varsity four was quickly behind in its heat, rowing in fifth place at the 500-meter mark. Leader Ohio State had almost a full length over U-M. Through the middle of the race Michigan attempted to make a move on Wisconsin, which was in fourth. The Badgers responded, however, and extended their lead on U-M. With 500 meters left Harvard had reeled in U-M to drop the Wolverines into sixth. Over the final stretch of the race Michigan regained fifth place and finished in a time of 7:48.1, 12.7 seconds behind the event's winner, Ohio State. The Buckeyes move to the grand final and the Wolverines will race in a repechage on Saturday.
The Wolverines return to Lake Natoma tomorrow (May 29) at 9:30 a.m. when repechages for the second varsity eight and first varsity four commence. The semifinals for the first varsity eight begin at 10:30 a.m. The finals will take place on Sunday (May 30) morning. To follow the races live, visit hornetsports.com.

Q U O T E S
Head Coach Mark Rothstein
On the first varsity eight's preliminary heat victory ... "I thought we had a good race, a good performance. It's just a preliminary heat. We know it's going to be very very difficult to make the final at this regatta, but certainly I was pleased with that."
On the team's performance thus far ... "I think we are in a good place. We know that in all three events we're going to have to find something if we're going to make the final. I was pleased with today's racing. Tomorrow is going to be a whole new ballgame. There is unbelieveable speed at this regatta. We're going to do our best."
