WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- University of Michigan junior/sophomore LHP Paul Hammond (Mason, Ohio/Mason HS) pitched his second straight Big Ten complete-game victory in the opener to beat Purdue 4-2, and a late Wolverine rally in the nightcap fell short with host Purdue taking the second game 4-3 in a baseball doubleheader Sunday afternoon (May 9) at Lambert Field.
Hammond (4-0, 4.22 ERA) allowed six hits to win the opener as the Wolverines (25-20, 13-10 Big Ten) grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third inning and scored twice in the seventh inning to snap a 2-2 tie for the win.
Sophomore 2B Chris Getz (Grosse Pointe, Mich./South HS) helped supply the offense for Hammond as he tripled to center in the third inning to score freshman CF Eric Rose (Blissfield, Mich./Blissfield HS) from first with the opening run of the game, and Getz scored on a groundout by junior RF Matt Butler (Lombard, Ill./Driscoll Catholic) for the 2-0 lead. Rose had reached when he was hit by a pitch on an 0-2 count.
Purdue (23-22, 12-11 Big Ten) tied the game in the bottom of the third on a double by CF Mike Coles and a homer, his third of the year, by 3B Simon Klink.
The winning rally came in the seventh as Rose singled with one out and moved to second on his eight stolen base of the season. Getz lined a shot down the leftfield line for a double to snap the 2-2 tie and collect his second "gamer" of the year. Butler followed with a single to put runners on first and third with one out, and junior 1B Kyle Bohm (Stevens Point, Wis./Area HS) knocked in his team-leading 43rd RBI as he grounded into a fielder's choice.
Hammond, who suffered a cut on his pitching hand, issued a walk to lead off the bottom of the seventh, but with the tying run on base Hammond induced a 5-4-3 double play from sophomore 3B A.J. Scheidt (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) to Getz to Bohm. It was one of five Michigan double plays in the doubleheader. The final out of the game was a diving catch by Butler in right.
The second game of the doubleheader took just and hour and 48 minutes, and much of the game was in the hands of Purdue lefty Brian Karpel, who took a 4-0 three-hitter into the seventh inning.
Purdue had scored single runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings, with backup catcher Spencer Ingaldson sparking the Boilermaker offense as he was 3-for-3 with a double and scored the last three runs for Purdue.
The Boilermakers had taken the lead off Wolverine junior RHP Michael Penn (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Christian) in the first on a single by Coles, a sacrifice bunt and a run-scoring single by Klink.
Penn (4-4) worked four innings in the loss, allowing nine hits and the first three runs. Freshman RHP Dan Lentz (Farmington Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) allowed the final run.
The Wolverines had a bid to score in the fourth when Purdue CF Coles made a great running catch to rob Scheidt of extra bases with two on and two out, but Scheidt started the seventh-inning rally with a single, his third hit of the doubleheader.
Freshman OF Brad Roblin (Wayland, Mass./Rivers School) and sophomore OF Mike Schmidt (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) came off the bench swinging and produced pinch singles to load the bases. Getz battled the lefty Karpel, fouling off several tough pitches, and was at the plate when a wild pitch brought Scheidt in to score. Getz singled up the middle to make the score 4-2, and Big Ten save leader Jason Driscoll, who earned the win for Purdue in the series opener on Friday, entered the game.
Rose hit a hard grounder to second and Purdue 2B Eric Osborn made an excellent play on a bad hop and retired Rose at first as Schmidt scored and Getz advanced to second. However, Driscoll notched his fifth save of the year when Bohm grounded to short to end the game.
Getz, Rose and Scheidt each had three hits in the doubleheader for the Wolverines.
Michigan closes out the Big Ten series at Purdue with a rare Monday afternoon (May 10) game. Sophomore RHP Derek Feldkamp (Adrian, Mich./Blissfield HS), with a 4-5 record and a 3.44 ERA, will take the mound for the Wolverines.
