
Park’s Clutch Ninth-Inning Hit Leads Wolverines to Sweep of Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Using another ninth-inning rally, the University of Michigan baseball team defeated Maryland, 8-7, on Sunday afternoon (May 3) at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium.
Michigan (30-17, 15-9 Big Ten) trailed 7-5 entering the ninth but quickly brought the tying run to the plate as pinch hitter Jack Laffitte was hit by the first pitch. Two strong catches from the Maryland rightfielder recorded the first two outs before Evan Haeger drew a walk to extend the inning. Brayden Jefferis delivered his third hit of the day, scoring pinch runner Carson Luna from third to cut the deficit to one.
Joonsung Park followed with a double to the right-center gap, scoring Haeger easily and bringing Jefferis home on a close play at the plate to give Michigan an 8-7 lead.
Cade Montgomery picked up his fourth save of the season, tossing a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts while stranding two runners.
Maryland (22-26, 6-18 Big Ten) fell behind early as Michigan scored four runs in the third inning. Cooper Mullens led off with a single before Colby Turner launched a two-run home run. Haeger later walked and scored on a triple from Jefferis, who came around to score on a fielder's choice.
The Terrapins got one run back in the fourth, but Michigan answered in the fifth as Haeger scored after reaching on a leadoff single.
Maryland tied the game with two runs in the fifth on a home run before taking the lead with two runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Michigan stranded two runners in the sixth and went down in order in the seventh and eighth before the ninth-inning comeback.
The Wolverines will next face Xavier in a midweek contest Tuesday (May 5) at 3 p.m. at Hayden Field in Cincinnati. The game will be streamed on Xavier All-Access.
