AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior/junior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell HS) of the University of Michigan women's track and field team earned the third All-America citation of her career with a fourth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run Saturday (June 12) on the fourth and final day at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. With her performance, Gallo garnered five points for the Wolverines to put them in a seven-way tie for 41st place in the final team standings.
Starting on the far inside lane, Gallo took her place in the middle of the pack when the field broke down into her lane. She made her first move on the first home stretch, cutting to the outside of the pack and moving into the third position. Gallo moved again at the 400-meter mark, pulling into second behind leader Tiffany McWilliams of Mississippi State with less than two laps remaining.
Gallo held her ground as the field strung out acoss the track, running in the second position as the lead group of four put considerable distance on the rest of the field. As McWilliams began to pull away with 600 meters remaining, Gallo was passed by the two other members of the lead group down the stretch. The Wolverine slightly dropped off the pace in the last lap but held her ground to claim fourth place with a time of 4:15.33.
With the fourth-place finish -- the best by any Wolverine in the event -- Gallo earned her third NCAA All-America honor of the 2004 season and first of her career at the Outdoor Championships. During the indoor season she helped U-M's distance medley relay team to seventh place and became U-M's highest finishing runner in the mile with a sixth-place showing., both of which garnered All-America status.
Her All-America honor in the 1,500m is just the second earned by a Wolverine in the history of the program. Former Wolverine Cathy Schmidt (1985-86) was the first to do so when she placed sixth in the event at the 1986 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

On the 1,500-meter final ... "We made a decision beforehand to just go for it, so I went out with Tiffany (McWilliams), but it went really fast -- a lot faster than I've ever gone out before. I really just hit a wall with about 500 meters to go, and I was pretty happy that I was able to hold on for fourth."
