Stephenson Advances to Javelin Final at National Meet

AUSTIN, Texas -- As heavy rain and lightning wiped out nearly the entire first day of competition at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Thursday (June 9), graduate/senior Lindsey Stephenson (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg HS) paced the University of Michigan by advancing to javelin final round with an eighth-place performance during the qualifying preliminaries.
Stephenson will return to the infield Friday evening (June 11) for the finals of the event at 8:15 p.m. CDT. She will look to become the first javelin thrower to earn NCAA All-America status in Michigan history. Debbie Williams (1979-82) was an All-American in 1982, but the feat was accomplished at the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women National Championships.
After waiting through nearly eight hours of rain delays, the women's javelin resumed competition at 9 p.m. as the rain began to slowly let up. Stephenson recorded a top throw of 153-10 to place fifth in the second flight and eighth overall among the 28 competitors.
Sophomore Elizabeth Boyle (Northbrook, Ill./New Trier HS) and senior Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) were also scheduled to compete on the first day, in the pole vault and discus, respectively, but those events were rescheduled for Friday. A revised schedule for the U-M athletes is listed below. For the complete revised schedule, visit the University of Texas site.
