Upperclassmen Lead Michigan to First at Indiana State

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's cross country team took first place behind three top-four finishes by junior Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Groves), senior Sarah Pizzo (Golden, Colo./Mullen) and senior Andrea Parker (Livonia, Mich./Stephenson) at the Indiana State Invitational Saturday afternoon (Sept. 11).
Walter placed second overall with a time of 17:15.34, while Pizzo clocked in third at 17:44.51 and Parker finished in fourth four seconds later in 17:48.70. Junior Theresa Feldkamp (Lorain, Ohio/Amherst Steele) took seventh place in a time of 17:59.67 to give U-M four harriers in the top 10.
Three Wolverines crossed the line less than three second aparts to take 18th, 19th and 20th when sophomore Jackie Gaydos (Allen Park, Mich./Allen Park), sophomore Jessie Stewart (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix) and freshman Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's) finished in that order to give the Maize and Blue seven of the top 20 spots. Sophomore Arianne Field (Kalamazoo, Mich./Hackett Catholic Central) took 22nd, finishing in 18:43.53.
Sophomore Katie Erdman (Cadillac, Mich./Cadillac) crossed the line in 26th spot, while sophomore Leslie Jurasek (Concord, Mich./Albion) crossed in 27th place just a second after Erdman. Sophomore Laura Brosius (Saline, Mich./Saline) took 31st spot in just under 19 minutes, while freshman Erin Webster (Dearborn, Mich./Divine Child) placed 45th out of 80 entrants.
U-M looks to continue its early success at the Spartan Invitational on Friday (Sept. 17) in East Lansing.
