IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The No. 16 University of Michigan women's soccer team won its fifth straight game and stayed perfect in Big Ten Conference play with a 4-0 shutout victory over Iowa Sunday afternoon (Sept. 26) at the Iowa Soccer Complex. After a scoreless first half of action, the Wolverines exploded for four second-half goals, including a hat trick by freshman Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School). U-M's offense peppered the Hawkeye goal with 24 shots, while the Maize and Blue defense allowed just three Iowa attempts on net.
Following a first half in which the Wolverines outshot Iowa by a 10-1 margin, Michigan was finally able to break through and put a goal on the scoreboard in the 56th minute. Senior Laura Tanchon's (Laguna Niguel, Calif./Dana Hills HS) kick off the restart sailed toward the front of the net, and Artsis positioned herself before taking the rebound and putting it past Hawkeye goalkeeper Britta Vogele to put U-M on top 1-0.
Artsis provided Michigan with a two-goal advantage nearly 15 minutes later, as she blasted a 25-yard strike from midfield. The Wolverines continued their attack in the 87th minute, when junior Katie Kramer (Andover, Mass./Andover HS) took a serve from sophomore Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa HS) and finished far post past the reach of Vogele to give Michigan a 3-0 lead.
Artsis completed the hat trick just before time expired, as she headed a ball off a Tanchon corner kick past Vogele to seal the victory for U-M.
The Wolverines (7-2-1, 4-0 Big Ten) return to action next weekend when they host Penn State on Friday (Oct. 1) and Ohio State on Sunday (Oct. 3) at the U-M Soccer Field. The game against the Nittany Lions is set to begin at 4 p.m., while the match against the Buckeyes is slated for a noon start.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On returning home undefeated to face Penn State and Ohio State ... "They're excited. We know that both of those teams are probably going to be undefeated (in the Big Ten) as well after this weekend. This upcoming weekend is going to establish the positioning in the Big Ten standings. The girls are excited and we're all excited to be playing at home."
On Jamie Artsis breaking through and finding the back of the net ... "She's been dying to do that. It's kind of a relief for her because she's typically a goal-scorer. She just needed to get that monkey off her back."
N O T E S
Jamie Artsis recorded her first career goal at Michigan in the second half against Iowa. She also finished with a career-high four shots.
Jamie Artsis' hat trick was the first by a U-M player since Abby Crumpton's (1999-2002) three-goal performance during a 3-2 victory at Wisconsin on Sept. 27, 2002. Artsis is the just the fifth athlete and the third freshman in Michigan history to accomplish the feat.
With three goals today and an assist on the game-winner in double overtime at Northwestern on Friday (Sept. 24), Jamie Artsis finished the weekend with a total of seven points.
Katie Kramer collected her first goal of the season and the seventh of her career. In 31 career games, Kramer has a total of 15 points on seven goals and one assist.
Sophomore goalkeeper Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic HS) earned her third straight shutout and the ninth of her career.
With the victory, Michigan matches its best conference start in the history of the program. The 1997 team also started 4-0.
U-M allowed just three Iowa shots and no corner kicks, which are both season-lows for an opponent.
The Wolverines remain perfect against Iowa at 9-0.
