Volleyball Sweeps Maryland-Eastern Shore in New York

RIVERDALE, N.Y. -- University of Michigan junior Candace Gay (Detroit, Mich./Sacred Heart) recorded nine kills in her first action of the season, while senior Jennifer Gandolph (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove) had seven kills, moving one step closer to second place on the all-time kills list, as the Maize and Blue swept Maryland-Eastern Shore, 3-0 (30-18, 30-22, 30-17) in the opening match of the Manhattan College Invitational, Friday night (Sept. 3) at Draddy Gymnasium.
Freshman Lyndsay Miller (Ida, Mich./Ida) and sophomore Danielle Pflum (Martinsville, Ind./Martinsville) each had six kills, while Miller, Gay and senior Lisa Gamalski (Milwaukee, Wis./Catholic Memorial) added three blocks each to the cause.
Michigan dominated with strong serving, recording seven aces in the match, one shy of last seasons high. Gamalski led the charge with three service aces while Gandolph had two and Pflum and senior Sarah Allen (Mechanicsburg, Md./Mechanicsburg) each had one.
The win improves Michigan to 2-0 on the year, while Maryland-Eastern Shore even its record to 1-1.
The Wolverines play two matches on Saturday, Sept. 4 beginning with a tilt against the host Manhattan Jaspers at 9:00 a.m., while the final match of the tournament pits Michigan against American University at 4 p.m.
