OAKLAND, Calif. -- Freshman midfielder Jamie Artsis (Chatsworth, Calif./Harvard-Westlake School) of the University of Michigan women's soccer team, who was selected as the Big Ten Conference Offensive Player of the Week this past Monday (Sept. 27), earned national recognition with a nomination to Soccer America's Team of the Week on Tuesday (Sept. 28). Considered the country's No. 1 soccer magzine, Soccer America honored Artsis following her seven-point outburst in the Wolverines' two Big Ten road victories last weekend.
After collecting her first career point with an assist on freshman Kandice McLaughlin's (West Hills, Calif./El Camino Real HS) game-winning goal in double overtime to defeat Minnesota, 1-0, on Friday (Sept. 24), Artsis scored the first three goals of her collegiate career to lead Michigan past Iowa, 4-0, on Sunday (Sept. 26). Her hat trick was the first by a U-M player since Abby Crumpton's (1999-2002) three-goal performance during a 3-2 victory at Wisconsin on Sept. 27, 2002. Artsis is the just the fifth athlete and the third freshman in Michigan history to accomplish the feat.
Artsis and Wolverines (7-2-1, 4-0 Big Ten) return to action this weekend when they host Penn State on Friday (Oct. 1) and Ohio State on Sunday (Oct. 3) at the U-M Soccer Field. The game against the Nittany Lions is set to begin at 4 p.m., while the match against the Buckeyes is slated for a noon start.
