The season-best round vaulted the Wolverines into a tie for seventh place with a season-best 871 54-hole tournament total. Fall Schedule Offers Challenging Start
The 2004 fall season has the Wolverines challenge right from the start. After hosting the Radrick Farms Intercollegiate (Sept. 11-12), the Maize and Blue head to Madison, Wis., for the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 18-19) in what will be a early preview of the 2005 Big Ten Championships course C University Ridge. After two tournaments right out of the gate, the Wolverines will have three weeks to prep for the remainder of the fall schedule.
The Maize and Blue begin with a trip to Durham, N.C., to play in the Duke Intercollegiate (Oct. 17-18), before heading out to the toughest challenge of the year C The Big Ten/Pac 10 Challenge (Oct. 25-26). The Wolverines were a late addition to the prestigious tournament field as seven teams from each conference will battle each other at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon Dunes, Ore. The field includes: Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Penn State and Purdue from the Big Ten and Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Southern Cal, Washington and UCLA from the Pac 10.
The Wolverines will close out the fall season with their second trip to North Carolina and the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C. (Oct. 29-31). This year the Wolverines will play the Landfall at the nationally known Country Club of Landfall, which was designed by Jack Nicklaus.
Meeting the Newest Wolverines
Two players highlight U-M coach Andrew Sapp's second recruiting class as Brian Ottenweller and Tim Schaetzel come to Ann Arbor. Both bring enough experience and talent to challenge for starting spots right away.
Ottenweller, a 2003 Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association Golf Super Team selection, has played varsity golf at Grand Rapids Catholic Central the last four years. The three-time Division II All-State selection was third at the 2003 state finals and tied for seventh at the 2001 and 2002 finals. He was a four-time All-City selection and a three-time All-Area selection. Outside of high school golf, Ottenweller has posted six top-20 finishes in AJGA events the last two years. He also competed at the 2003 U.S. Junior Amateur Championship after winning the qualifier at Grand Haven Golf Club in Grand Haven, Mich.
Schaetzel, a 2003 American Junior Golf Association Scholastic All-American, has played varsity golf the last four years at Pace Academy in Atlanta, Ga. The two-time team MVP tied for 10th at the 2003 Georgia High School Class AA State Championship after earning medalist honors at the 2003 5AA Regional. He has also played in several junior golf tours, competing with the AJGA, the Future Collegians World Tour, the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour (2002) and the Independent National Golf Tournaments. Schaetzel has been a National Honor Society member the last two years and is a National Merit Scholar Semifinalist.
The Youth Movement
The underclassmen made a solid impact for the Wolverines during the 2003-04 season. Christian Vozza and Kevin Dore led the Wolverines in four tournaments. In fact, a then-sophomore or then-freshman led U-M in 12 tournaments - Vozza (4), Dore (4), Brandon Duff (2) and Matt McLaughlin (2).
Three Way Race Returns for Another Season
The competitive nature on the course also was key atop the Wolverine leaderboard last year as Christian Vozza, Kevin Dore and Rob Tighe battled all year for the top spot. Vozza closed out the year with a 75.00 scoring average, while Dore (75.38) and Tighe (75.67) were closely behind. All three return to do battle again this season.
A Pair of Aces!
Not only Christian Vozza and Kevin Dore finishas the top two Wolverines in the last five tournaments they are the only Maize and Bluers to have competed in all 12 events last year. Vozza carded 19 of his last 20 under 80, finishing the season shooting over 80 just three times. He had 31 of 34 below the 80 mark and led the team with 75.00 scoring average. He also had two rounds below 70, with a 69 (second round) and a career-best 67 (third round) at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 20-21, 2003). Dore closed out last season firing 20 straight rounds under 80 strokes and had just four total rounds above 80 as he has 30 of 34 rounds on the season. He was second on the Wolverines shooting 75.77 per round and two rounds below 70, with a 69 in the first round of the Hoosier Invitational (Sept. 27-28, 2003) and then a career-best 68 in the final round of the Big Ten Championships (May 8-9, 2004).
