COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's gymnastics team led wire-to-wire thanks to dominant all-arounnd performances by sophomore Lindsey Bruck (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) and junior Jenny Deiley (Dayton, Minn./Elk River) as Michigan defeated No. 15 Maryland, No. 19 Minnesota and Ohio State at the Ohio State Quadrangular Saturday night (Jan. 15) at St. John Arena. Bruck won the all-around with a 39.125 total, while Deiley finished third (38.650).
The Wolverines steadily increased their lead, relying on their No. 5-ranked balance beam team to close out the first road meet of the season with a 49.100 in the final rotation and total of 196.025. Minnesota finished second with 193.925, Ohio State third (192.675) and Maryland was fourth (191.550).
U-M dominated the individual awards with Bruck winning the beam and the all-around, Deiley winning beam and floor exercise titles, and four Wolverines -- including event winner Elise Ray (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) -- taking the top four spots on the uneven bars.
Michigan took a slim lead over Ohio State and Minnesota after the first rotation thanks to Deiley's season-high 9.825 and senior Becca Clauson's (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) rotation-ending 9.800 on the floor exercise. Maryland suffered a number of falls on bars and limped to beam trailing the Wolverines by 1.45.
U-M posted four solid vault scores in the second rotation led by freshman Katie Lieberman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) and Deiley, who recorded back-to-back 9.875s, leading Michigan to its fifth-best vault score since the start of the 2004 season. Michigan's total of 49.150 gave it a 1.075 lead over second-place Minnesota and a 1.225 cushion over third-place Ohio State.
Heading into a pivotal rotation on bars, Deiley and senior Lauren Mirkovich (Burlingame, Calif./Notre Dame) stuck back-to-back 9.850 routines and Ray ended the rotation with a 9.925, posting her 13th straight score of 9.900 or better on bars and clinching the 20th uneven bars title of her career.
Michigan hosts Penn State on Friday (Jan. 21) at 7:30 p.m. in Crisler Arena.
