ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's gymnastics team defeated Big Ten Conference contender and No. 20-ranked Penn State 196.075-194.550 in front of its third-biggest crowd in U-M's history (4,376) on Friday night (Jan. 21) to remain undefeated. Junior Jenny Deiley (Dayton, Minn./Elk River) won the all-around competition with a score of 39.325, while senior Elise Ray (Columbia, Md./Wilde Lake) won every event in which she competed, claiming the uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise titles.

Ray's first floor routine of the season was a winner.

The first rotation featured two solid vault performances from Deiley and freshman Katie Lieberman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest), who both recorded scores of 9.850, tying for second place. Michigan continued to increase its lead after impressive uneven bar scores from five Wolverines, led by Ray's with a 9.900, good for her third straight bars title of 2005 and her sixth straight overall dating back to 2004. Senior Lauren Mirkovich (Burlingame, Calif./Notre Dame), Bruck and Deiley tied for third place in the event (9.825). Freshman Nellie Kippley (St. Cloud, Minn./Tech) recorded a career-high score of 9.800 on the night, giving her a fourth-place tie with PSU's Meredith Hoover.

U-M moved to the balance beam for the third rotation, and the Wolverines maintained a 0.625 cushion over the Nittany Lions. Ray had another strong performance, tallying a 9.925 to take the beam title, while junior Becca Clauson (St. Paul Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and Bruck tied for third place. Deiley added another solid score of 9.800, giving her a fifth-place finish.

In the final event of the evening, Ray won the floor exercise title with a score of 9.900, while senior Shanna Duggan (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/St. Basil), Deiley and Penn State's Kristal Uzelac all tied for a strong third-place finish.

The Wolverines travel to Salt Lake City to take on the No. 2-ranked Utah Utes Friday (Jan. 28).
