The Wolverines wasted no time scoring the first goal of the game at 12:42. Dobbyn took a long ball from the weak side from Heaton, trapped it behind the Iowa defense, and went one-on-one with Iowa goalkeeper Erin MacIsaac, burying a shot to make the score 1-0. Coffman added to the lead at 23:27 on a penalty kick. Coffman was fouled in the box but took advantage of the penalty kick opportunity to put the Wolverines up 2-0 going into halftime.
The Wolverines came out strong in the second half, extending their lead at 56:52 on a goal by Heaton. Dobbyn fed a through ball to Heaton, who beat the goalkeeper on a shot from the top of the box to make the score 3-0. Less than six minutes later, Coffman netted her second goal of the game at 62;18. Coffman took a pass from Heaton, created space with the dribble and buried a shot past MacIsaac to move the score to 4-0.
The Maize and Blue nearly earned its first shutout of the season, but Iowa cut the lead to 4-1 at 72:10 when Stephanie Hyink volleyed a cross from Jamie Maltman past Gates. Michigan kept the pressure on the remainder of the game and left Iowa City with a 4-1 triumph.
Michigan returns home next Friday (Oct. 21) to face the top-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions at 7 p.m. at the U-M Soccer Field.
