ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Three doubles pairings from the University of Michigan men's tennis team earned first-round victories in the main draw at the 2005 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Friday evening (Oct. 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Three Wolverines were unable to advance out of the 64-player singles qualifying round earlier in the day.
The U-M tandems of junior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) and sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija), and junior Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) and freshman Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) posted impressive 8-3 wins over their opponents in the opening round of the 64-team doubles bracket. Hung and Maravic, the No. 2 seed in the draw, defeated Louisville's Stefon Naughton and Pablo Camacho. Peretz and Aarts overtook Ann Arbor native Kevin Hayward and Jeff French of Western Michigan, 8-3.
Junior Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) and freshman Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) had a bit of a tougher time in their match, but the Michigan duo prevailed over Louisville's Jhonny Berrido and Tony Teufel by an 8-6 score.
The Maize and Blue fell short of a doubles sweep in the first round, as freshmen Scott Bruckmann (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal School) and Mike DePietro (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Lahser HS) lost 8-3 to Minnesota's Nic Edlefsen and Sion Wilkins.
Peretz came up just shy in his attempt at one of eight qualifying spots into the singles main draw, as he dropped a marathon match to Toledo's Mohammed Al Nabhani (6-4, 5-7, 6-4) in the third round. Peretz advanced to the qualifying final thanks to a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Northern Illinois' Brian Livingston earlier in the morning.
Two other U-M players dropped second-round decisions in qualifying singles action. Bruckmann was dealt a 6-1, 6-2 loss at the hands of No. 15 seed Andrew Roth of Notre Dame. Aarts fell short in his comeback attempt against DePaul's Gabe Inchauste, losing 6-3, 6-7(5), 7-6(3).
Heller, Hung, Mazlin and Maravic will compete in the first round of the 64-player main singles draw beginning tomorrow (Saturday, Oct. 22). All four will play after the completion of the 8 a.m. matches. The second round of the singles main draw will also be contested tomorrow.
