Late Goal Costly in Wolverines' Loss to Golden Gophers

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team battled with Minnesota in a tough, physical game that featured just seven shots on goal on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23) but could not score and lost 1-0 at the U-M Soccer Field. Megan Tuura (Tucker, Ga./St. Pius X Catholic) and Madison Gates (Baldwinsville, N.Y./C.W. Baker) split time in net for the Wolverines, each making two saves. Judy Coffman (San Jose, Calif./Santa Theresa) had a team-high three shots in the contest.
Michigan outshot the Gophers 4-3 in the first half, with neither team generating any threatening scoring chances as the two teams went into the halftime locker room tied 0-0.
The first scoring chance came in the 59th minute as Minnesota forward Becky Dellaria broke in alone on a short breakaway. Gates, who entered the game at halftime, came out aggressively and stoned Dellaria to keep the game in a deadlock. The ball rolled around Gates, but she snagged it before any Gopher player could get a foot on it.
Michigan nearly netted the first goal of the game in the 67th minute. Danelle Underwood (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) fed a pass to Therese Heaton (Wheaton, Ill./Warrenville South) just inside the 18-yard box, but her shot attempt was blocked.
Just over five minutes later at 73:15, Minnesota's Lindsey Schwartz took a throw-in and launched a high, innocent shot from 30 yards out that sailed over Gates into the top right corner of the net to put Minnesota up 1-0. Michigan pursued offensively, holding the ball in its half of the field for the remainder of the game but could not get the equalizer.
The Wolverines stay home for the regular-season finale against Michigan State Friday (Oct. 28) at the U-M Soccer Field.

Michigan Head Coach Debbie Rademacher
On today's game ... "I think we were showing some fatigue from Friday. It wasn't terrible. How many times does that shot go in It's just one of those fluky things. Minnesota stayed strong defensively, especially. We had a hard time getting in. We knew they were going to be physical. It's just disappointing to have a goal like that scored on us. It was unexpected."
On the upcoming game with Michigan State ... "Every game is a must win. It is a must win because we want to finish the season strong and Michigan State is an in-state opponent. We want to build some momentum into the Big Ten Tournament."
