Maravic in Singles Quarterfinals at ITA Midwest Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimanzjia) is the final University of Michigan men's tennis player standing at the 2005 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships, as he won his third-round match in the 64-player main singles draw Sunday morning (Oct. 23) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Later in the day, Michigan's three remaining doubles pairings all suffered defeats at the hands of teams from the University of Illinois.
The No. 3 seed in the 64-player draw, Maravic posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over No. 120-ranked Bryan Koniecko of Ohio State. Maravic will face Notre Dame's No. 4 seed Sheeva Parbhu in the quarterfinals tomorrow (Monday, Oct. 24) at 9 a.m.
Two Michigan doubles teams advanced to the round of 16 before being eliminated. Maravic and junior Brian Hung (Hong Kong, China/Sagemont Virtual School) defeated Michigan State's John Allare and Scott Rasmussen 8-3 before falling to the Fighting Illini's Pramod Dabir and Brandon Davis, 8-6. Junior Ryan Heller (Northbrook, Ill./Glenbrook North HS) and freshman Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) slipped by No. 53-ranked Brady Crosby and Jose Orozco of Western Michigan 9-8(5), but then suffered an 8-3 setback to Illinois' Marc Spicijaric and Monte Tucker.
Junior Steve Peretz (Brooklyn, N.Y./The Dwight School) and freshman Peter Aarts (Pound Ridge, N.Y./Fox Lane HS) exited the tournament with an 8-3 loss to the Illini's Ruben Gonzales and Ryan Rowe in the second round.
