Maravic Drops Quarterfinal Match at Midwest Regional

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Matko Maravic (Zagreb, Croatia/V. Gimnazija) of the University of Michigan men's tennis team fell just short of a semifinals berth in the main singles draw at the 2005 Wilson/ITA Midwest Regional Championships Monday morning (Oct. 24) at the Varsity Tennis Center. Maravic, the No. 3 seed, had three match points during the second-set tiebreaker, but No. 5 seed Sheeva Parbhu battled back to take the final two sets and claim the victory, 6-7(4), 7-6(9), 6-2.
Maravic, who is ranked No. 42 in the ITA preseason national rankings, earned the early leg up in the match after winning a tight first set, 7-6(4). The two opponents traded games throughout a majority of the second set, with Maravic experiencing some back pain in the late stages. Despite facing three match points, Parbhu came out on top by an 11-9 score in the ensuring tiebreaker to knot the match at one set apiece. The 77th-ranked Parbhu then overtook Maravic 6-2 in the third and decisive set to advance to Tuesday's (Oct. 25) semifinal.
Michigan will switch focus to the final events of the 2005 fall season: the ITA National Indoor Championships (Nov. 3-6) in Columbus, Ohio, and the Big Ten Conference Singles Championship (Nov. 12-14) in East Lansing, Mich.
