Michigan Concludes Fall with Head Race at Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's rowing team wrapped up its fall varsity season Saturday (Oct. 29) with head racing on the St. Joseph River against Notre Dame and Michigan State. The course was set at 4,200 meters. Michigan boated two varsity eights, two varsity fours and three novice crews.
Michigan State's crews finished one-two in the varsity eight race with its "A" crew clocking in at 14:03.4. The Spartan "B" shell crossed the finish line in 14:15.1. The Wolverine "A" crew was third overall in 14:17.1. Notre Dame finished fourth and fifth, while Michigan's "B" boat was sixth in 14:48.1.
Seven boats competed in the varsity four event. MSU's two crews were first and second in the race, finishing with times of 16:06.6 and 16:32.1. Michigan's first finisher crossed the line in 16:46.3, while Notre Dame's "C" crew turned in a time of 16:48.0. Notre Dame's "B" and "A" boats placed fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 16:54.8 and 16:58.0. Michigan's other shell was seventh in the race in 17:03.7.
Michigan's top novice crew won the eight-boat novice race in 15:33.6. Michigan State's "A" boat was second in 16:08.0. The Fighting Irish's top boat was third in 16:27.9. Michigan and Michigan State's "B" boats were fourth and fifth, respectively, with times of 16:37.0 and 16:37.7. Notre Dame's second entry was sixth in 17:13.6. After MSU's third boat took seventh Michigan's "C" boat finished eighth in 19:15.7.
The Wolverines have a home event scheduled for Nov. 5 on Belleville Lake, but only the novice team will compete against Eastern Michigan. The varsity will train in Tampa, Fla., during winter and spring break to prepare for the 2006 spring season.
