ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's basketball program announced today (Friday, Nov. 18) that center Krista Phillips (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan/Aden Bowman Collegiate HS) has signed a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Wolverines in 2006-07.
At 6-foot-6, Phillips adds another dimension to head coach Cheryl Burnett's third recruiting class, which also includes guards Sireece Bass (Detroit, Mich./Pershing HS) and Kalyn McPherson (Traverse City, Mich./Traverse City West HS), and forward LeQuisha Whitfield (Detroit, Mich./Martin Luther King HS), who all committed to U-M last week.
"Krista is a very aggressive and physical post player," said Burnett. "She provides an inside presence and a competitive edge that will be a great benefit to this team. Krista has the ability to score, rebound and block shots. She also has a wealth of experience at the international level. We are thrilled that she will be joining our program next season."
Phillips led Aden Bowman Collegiate High School to an undefeated 32-0 record and a provincial championship last season, averaging 19.2 points per game. It was Aden Bowman's second straight undefeated season and provincial title. Phillips' career year was highlighted by a 36-point performance against the LeBoldus Suns in the Big 8 finals. Phillips has also been a four-year member of Team Saskatchewan at the Canada Games.
Phillips will reunite with former teammate and current U-M freshman Stephany Skrba (Richmond Hill, Ontario/Langstaff Secondary School), whom she played with on Canada's Junior National Team this past summer. Phillips and Skrba played a key role in helping their team earn its first-ever trip to the World Championships in Africa. Phillips averaged 9.8 points per game and was the team's leading rebounder as the Canadians finished ninth overall at the tournament. Phillips, who was the fifth-leading rebounder at the Worlds, had a game-high 26 points against China.
In addition to the four recruits, Michigan will return next season all 11 players currently on the 2005-06 roster.
