ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's rowing head coach Mark Rothstein announced today (Friday, Nov. 18) the signing of seven student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2006-07 school year. The seven rowers include: Maggie Cooper (Lake Oswego, Ore./St. Mary's Academy), Sarah Gribler (Marysville, Wash./Marysville Pilchuck HS), Lori Gordon (Winchester, Mass./Winchester HS), Ashley Kroll (Edmonds, Wash./Kamiak HS), Claire Luczak (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), Adrienne Mecham (Lake Stevens, Wash./Lake Stevens HS) and Jordan Peek (Jacksonville, Fla./Stanton College Prep).
"We're extremely pleased," said Rothstein "It's a great group. We really enjoyed recruiting these kids. I think they're all going to do well. I think they're all going to fit in really well here at Michigan and enjoy themselves. We're really happy.
"Jordan, Adrienne, Sarah, and Lori were all in the U.S. Junior four this past summer, so everybody was recruiting them. To get one of those kids would have been nice, but to have all four of them choose Michigan is just great. Another unique aspect of this class is that we have three rowers from one program, Everett Rowing in Washington--Adrienne (Mecham), Sarah (Gribler), and Ashley (Kroll). All three of them rowed in the eigth that came in 2nd at the U.S. Junior Nationals in Cincinnati. Claire Luczak is a local kid from Ann Arbor. She came to our camp last summer. Cooper was also at the U.S. Junior Camp. She comes from a really good program in Oregon."
Cooper, who is from Lake Oswego, Ore., rows for the Rose City Rowing Club. In 2005, she attended the U.S. Junior National Team Selection Camp.
Gribler hails from Marysville, Wash., where she competes with fellow U-M recruits Ashley Kroll and Adrienne Mechum for the Everett Rowing Club. During the summer of 2005 she was in the four with the U.S. Junior National Team.
Gordon is a native of Winchester, Mass. Currently, she is training independently in a single. Gordon has two years of U.S. Junior National Team experience -- in 2004 she was in the eight, and in 2005 she rowed in the four.
Kroll, who is from Edmonds, Wash., is heading to Ann Arbor from the Everett Rowing Club. Kroll attended the U.S. Junior National Team Development Camp in 2005.
Luczak is an Ann Arborite who has competed for Pioneer High School's crew team as well as the Wyandotte Boat Club.
Mecham is native to Lake Stevens, Wash. She rows for the Everett Rowing Club. In 2005, Mecham was in the four for the U.S. Junior National Team.
Peek is from Jacksonville, Fla., where she competes for Stanton College Prep. She rowed in the U.S. four on the Junior National Team in 2005.
Michigan will graduate five rowers and two coxswains from its 2005-06 roster.
