SOMERS, Wis. -- CollegeSwimming.com announced today (Wednesday, Nov. 9) that University of Michigan senior and tri-captain Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams) garnered CollegeSwimming.com National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week honors for his performance in U-M's victory over No. 11 Georgia. The announcement comes just one day after he earned Big Ten Conference co-Swimmer of the Week laurels.

In addition, Vanderkaay won back-to-back events in the 400-yard individual medley and as the last leg in the 200-yard freestyle relay. His 400 IM time of 3:56.62 was more than 2.5 seconds faster than the next closest swimmer. The captain followed by swimming a 19.97 split in the relay -- the fastest among all competitors -- as his team finished two seconds ahead of Georgia's 'A' team in 1:22.20.
The national award is the second of Vanderkaay's career. His first citation came last season (Jan. 26, 2005) for his performance in U-M's victories over No. 14 Northwestern and No. 13 Indiana. He won all seven events (five individual, two relay) in which he was entered against the Wildcats and the Hoosiers.
The Maize and Blue have one week off before hosting Michigan State at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at Canham Natatorium.
