Bernard, Lieberman Lead Blue Team to Intrasquad Win

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan sophomore Nellie Kippley (St.Cloud, Minn./Tech) led the Maize team with a floor exercise title and a pair of third-place finishes on the uneven bars and balance beam, but it was the Blue team that won the women's gymnastics Maize and Blue Intrasquad, 193.275-190.825, Saturday evening (Dec. 10) at Crisler Arena.
Freshman Becky Bernard (Stow, Ohio/Stow-Monroe Falls) led the Blue squad with a beam title (9.825) and a third-place result on bars (9.825), while Blue team sophomore Katie Lieberman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) won vault (9.875). Maize fifth-year senior Lauren Mirkovich (Burlingame, Calif./Notre Dame) took the bars title (9.875), while junior teammate Lindsey Bruck (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) finished the evening with a pair of second-place results on vault (9.825) and bars (9.850).
Bruck also prevailed in the all-around with a score of 39.050, while Bernard and Blue team senior Jenny Deiley (Dayton, Minn./Elk River) tied for second with 38.925.
In the first rotation, the Blue team took an early 0.675 lead, 48.575-47.900, with Bernard's 9.825 on bars and Deiley's solid 9.775 showing. Bruck managed a 9.825 for third place on vault, while Mirkovich added a 9.725.
In the second rotation, the gap widened to 1.4 points, 97.200-95.80, as Lieberman's title-winning vault of 9.875 pushed the Blue team further ahead. Junior Carol McNamara (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) added a 9.800 for the Blue team to take third place. Mirkovich kept the Maize team in the hunt with a title-winning 9.875 on bars, while Bruck scored a 9.850 and Kippley added a 9.825.
The Blue team widened the gap even further through the final two rotations when Bernard stuck a 9.825 routine on beam to lead all competitors. McNamara's 9.775 on beam was good for second place, while Blue freshman Huneth Lor (Aurora, Ill./Waubonsie Valley) debuted with a third-place 9.675. Kippley was able to help the Maize team post the best floor score of the night with a 9.800, while Maize senior Becca Clauson (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) tied for second with a 9.750.
Michigan will host its home opener on Friday, Jan. 27, vs. Ohio State at 7:30 p.m. U-M will also host the 2006 NCAA Northeast Regional on Saturday, March 8, at 6 p.m. in Crisler Arena.
