YPSILANTI, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team swept all the swimming event titles for the second straight day Saturday (Dec. 3) on its way to a first-place finish at the Eastern Michigan Invitational at Jones Natatorium. Michigan's 1,075 points bested Eastern Michigan's 1,056 points for the win. Trailing EMU by 15 points entering the day's action, the Wolverines went 1-2 in the first three events and in six events overall. The Wolverine relay teams also won all four relay races on the day.
Kaitlyn Brady (Wilmington, Del./Mount Pleasant) helped the Wolverines to the win with her second and third top individual finishes of the weekend and two relay top finishes. She took first in the 100-yard butterfly (56.50) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:06.47). Brady along with Carolina Sierra (Medellin, Colombia/Colegio Palermo de San Jos), Valeria Silva (Lima, Peru/Alexander von Humboldt) and Lindsey Smith (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) combined to swim a meet-record time of 1:45.34 in the 200-yard medley relay to open up the meet. Brady, Abby Seskevics (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven), and the Smith sisters opened up the evening session with a meet-record time of 1:34.39 in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
Emily Brunemann (Crescent Springs, Ky./Notre Dame Academy) also swam on two winning relay teams to go along with her second top time in as many days in the 400-yard IM (4:27.77). Brunemann along with Hannah Smith, Gilliam and Lindsey Smith finished off the morning session with a meet-record time of 7:29.06 in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Brunemann then helped Michigan finish off the meet with a win by swimming the second leg of the 400-yard medley relay with anchor Hannah Smith, Payton Johnson (Champaign, Ill./Centennial) and Noelle Martin (Winston-Salem, N.C./R.J. Reynolds) to a first-place time of 3:54.11.
Hannah Smith had perhaps the best performance of her young career, taking first in both the 100-yard backstroke (57.02) and the 50-yard freestyle (24.02) to go along with her three relay wins. This marks the first time in her career she has finished a day with two individual wins.
Lindsey Smith added a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.64) to go along with her three relay wins. In addition to swimming on the winning 200-yard medley relay team, Silva earned her first top finish of the year with a top time in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:50.92).
Gilliam had an individual win in addition to her contribution to the winning 800-yard freestyle relay team with her meet-record time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:55.42). In the three-meter diving, Elyse Lee (Albion, Mich./Albion) had the best finish of any Wolverine diver with a third-place score of 257.95.
