ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan senior captain Nate Brannen (Cambridge, Ontario/Preston HS) was recognized by the United States Track Coaches Association on Tuesday (Feb. 1), earning NCAA Division I Male Athlete of the Week honors after nearly breaking the collegiate indoor mile record at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games. Brannen also repeated as the Big Ten Conference co-Athlete of the Week, sharing the honor with Wisconsin's Demi Omole.
Brannen clocked a time of 3:55.11 -- shattering his personal best by nearly three seconds -- to register the second-fastest indoor mile in collegiate history. The Wolverine missed the record, held by North Carolina's Tony Waldrop for almost 31 years, by just 0.11 seconds. With the performance, Brannen claimed both the Canadian senior record and U-M school record in the event, dethroning former Wolverine Kevin Sullivan from the top spot in both by 0.22 seconds.
It is the first national weekly honor for Brannen in his career; he joins junior Andrew Ellerton (Sudbury, Ontario/Confederation HS) as the only Wolverines to earn USTCA weekly recognition. Brannen claims back-to-back Big Ten weekly awards, giving him a career total of six between track and cross country.
Brannen and the No. 2-ranked Wolverines return to competition on Friday and Saturday (Feb. 4-5) at the prestigious Meyo Invitational in South Bend, Ind. Hosted annually by Notre Dame, the event is slated to begin at 7 p.m. on Friday at the Loftus Sports Complex.
