U-M Falls to Lions Despite Strong Showing by Corrigan

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Senior co-captain Geoff Corrigan (Colorado Springs, Colo./Palmer HS) notched five scores of 9.25 or better, but the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team fell to No. 5-ranked Penn State by a score of 222.600-219.575 Saturday night (Feb. 19) at PSU's Bryce Jordan Center.
Corrigan led the Wolverines from the start, posting a 9.50 on floor for second place. Junior Luke Bottke (Saginaw, Mich./Heritage HS) followed with a 9.40 of his own, good enough for fourth place as the Wolverines held a slight advantage over the Nittany Lions after one event.
Sophomore Aaron Rakes (Lexington, Ky./Dunbar HS) led Michigan on pommel horse with a solid 9.25 for second place, just ahead of junior Justin Laury's (Marietta, Ga./McEachern HS) third-place score of 9.15.
On rings, the trio of senior Eddie Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS), Laury and Corrigan anchored the Wolverines by grabbing the third (9.50), fourth (9.30) and fifth (9.25) spots, respectively.
These three Wolverines also led the team on vault, with Laury tying for second with a 9.30 and Corrigan and Umphrey posting scores of 9.25 to share the third spot. Corrigan was Michigan's top performer on parallel bars with a 9.50 for second place, followed by sophomore Andre Hernandez (Round Rock, Texas/Round Rock HS) in fifth with an 8.975.
The Wolverines finished the evening with a strong effort on high bar, with Corrigan posting another 9.50 for fourth place, followed by Rakes in fifth with a 9.40 and Hernandez in sixth with a 9.35.
The Wolverines return home to Cliff Keen Arena next Saturday (Feb. 26) at 1 p.m. for their final home competition of the regular season.
