COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The only thing that could stop the streaking University of Michigan softball team was Mother Nature as heavy rains forced the cancellation of Sunday's (Feb. 27) final day of action at the NFCA Leadoff Classic. Eighth-ranked Michigan was 4-0 in the tournament and had advanced to the Gold Bracket semifinals along with No. 21 Florida State, No. 13 Oklahoma and No. 16 Georgia.
Oklahoma was named the tournament champion as the highest seeded team remaining in the tournament's top bracket. Michigan was named tournament runner-up, its best Leadoff Classic finish since winning the tournament in 1998.
The Wolverines would have entered today's action on a 12-game win streak and had outscored its opponents at the Leadoff Classic 23-4.
Tiffany Haas (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill HS) and Nicole Motycka (Sarasota, Fla./Cardinal Mooney HS) were named to the all-tournament team. Haas hit .357, while Motycka went 2-0 in the circle with a 1.29 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 14.0 innings of work. Motycka added her second home run of the season and four RBI at the plate.
The Wolverines will spend the remainder of their Spring Break trip in the state of Florida, starting with a 4 p.m. doubleheader against the University of Florida on Tuesday (March 1) in Gainesville.
