FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- University of Michigan women's track and field fifth-year senior Lindsey Gallo (Freehold, N.J./Howell) made history with the best-ever finish for a Wolverine in the women's mile, taking third in a time of 4:41.52 on day two of the NCAA Indoor Championships Saturday (March 12) at the Randal Tyson Track Center.

Gallo earned All-America honors in the mile for the second consecutive season.
Gallo narrowly missed out on her bid to win a second national title in as many days, following Michigan's NCAA title in the distance medley relay on day one of the meet. Her third-place finish earned six points for the Wolverines, giving them 16 points for the championships -- the third best showing in program history.
Starting the race in the lower box, the Wolverine senior positioned herself at the back of the 10-person field as the two packs converged around the first turn. Gallo stayed at the rear through the opening 500 meters before cutting to the outside lane to accelerate down the backstretch and move into the fourth position coming out of the second bend. She again used the backstretch to gain ground on the leaders, pulling into third at the 900-meter mark and tucking in behind Nebraska's Anne Shadle and Duke's Shannon Rowbury.
The two frontrunners pulled away at the bell, putting a slight gap on Gallo -- a distance the Wolverine runner just could not make up in the final 200 meters. She crossed the line with a time of 4:41.52 -- her second-fastest mile performance of the season -- and finished exactly two and half seconds behind runner-up Rowbury.
Michigan finished 13th at the NCAA Indoor Championships thanks to Gallo's mile and 10 points from U-M's distance medley relay team, helping the Wolverines to their best finish since 1998. Michigan scored five points more than the 2004 squad, which racked up 11 points for a share of 19th place.
Gallo's result in the mile run was the first race all season that Gallo did not win, including contests in the 800-, 3,000- and 5,000-meter events, as well as the mile. She finishes the 2005 indoor season with two All-America honors, giving herfive career All-America track citations (four indoor, one outdoor).
The Wolverines open the outdoor track and field season at the Florida State Relays on Friday and Saturday (March 18-19) in Tallahassee, Fla.
